Carolyn opened our Advent series by reminding us that in all the Christmas preparations, the most important preparation is the one happening within our hearts. Joy is not based on circumstances or the busyness of the season. It is a deep work of the Holy Spirit as we see the beauty of Jesus in His Word and in the world around us.
The heart in Scripture is the core of who we are. It is where our desires live and where we respond to Jesus. This season, we are invited to pay attention to what is shaping our hearts. Carolyn explored three common challenges we face at Christmas and how Jesus meets us in each one.
First, busyness. In the rush of December, we can easily find ourselves with no room left for Jesus. Like those who overlooked His birth, we can miss out on the wonder He brings. Yet Jesus invites the weary to come to Him and find rest for their souls.
Second, troubled hearts. Christmas can bring disappointment, anxiety, loneliness, or grief. These emotions reveal our deep need for the peace only Jesus can give. He promises a peace unlike what the world offers, a peace that steadies and comforts us.
Third, disconnect. We often feel tension between the commercial Christmas around us and the true celebration of Jesus. But when we love others generously and listen to His leading, we discover joy that goes far beyond gifts and plans. Jesus fills our hearts with His love that overflows to those around us.
As we begin Advent, we are invited to prepare our hearts, to make room for Jesus, to receive His rest and peace, and to love others as He first loved us. This is how His joy becomes alive in us.
