It is easy to keep moving when the road is wide and everything is going well. But it is only when the road narrows, the pressure builds and there is no quick way out that we discover what it means to endure.
In 2 Peter 1, Peter calls us to add patient endurance to our faith. The original meaning carries the idea of remaining under, staying the course when life is difficult, the answer is taking longer than expected, or giving up would simply be easier. Scripture is filled with people who did exactly that, holding onto God through years of waiting, opposition and uncertainty.
Pastor Jeff took us into the life of Paul, whose faith endured rejection, waiting, persecution, imprisonment, shipwreck and suffering. Through Paul’s life and teaching, we see that endurance grows as we look beyond our immediate circumstances. Trials can form our character, hope gives us something to look towards, Scripture reminds us of God’s faithfulness, and God Himself gives us the strength we need to keep going.
Patient endurance does not mean pretending the pressure isn’t there. It means discovering that God is with us underneath it. As we surrender our circumstances to Him, He can lift our perspective, strengthen us through His Spirit and give us joy that is not dependent on everything going our way. Whatever road is ahead, we do not have to walk it in our own strength.
